Drinkable Rivers: How ¾µäÈý¼¶ Pupils are Shaping a Sustainable Future

We are proud to participate in the Drinkable Rivers citizen science programme, establishing our own hub to monitor and preserve the health of the River Lea.

Our Commitment

As part of this global effort, ¾µäÈý¼¶ pupils will actively contribute to tracking the progress towards achieving drinkable rivers worldwide. This project seamlessly integrates volunteering, STEM education, and sustainability, providing our pupils with hands-on experience in environmental stewardship.

“We are delighted to be supporting this important programme which fits with our commitment at ¾µäÈý¼¶ to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It is a very exciting partnership, which we will follow with interest.”

Tom Opie Sustainability Lead

River Lea Research Initiative

During our recent AEP week, ¾µäÈý¼¶ pupils conducted an intensive week of water collection at the River Lea in Hertford. Armed with professional measurement kits, they gathered data on fourteen key aspects, including:

  • Location specifics
  • River shape
  • Environmental health indicators
  • Chemical composition of the water

Special Presentation to William Miller

The culmination of our research week saw our pupils presenting their findings to special guest speaker, Mr. William Miller, an Old Haileyburian with an illustrious career in environmental science and advocacy.

Mr. Miller’s visit provided our pupils with invaluable insights into the real-world applications of environmental science and the importance of continued research and advocacy in this field.

Through the Drinkable Rivers programme, ¾µäÈý¼¶ continues to foster a spirit of scientific inquiry, environmental responsibility, and community engagement among our pupils, preparing them to be the environmental stewards of tomorrow.
